ABOUT ABOUT

Sponsored by Tzedek - Congregation Ner Shalom Social Justice Committee and Workers Circle/Arbeter Ring Northern California

Rethinking Justice means examining decarceration in the United States, which involves government policies and community campaigns aimed at reducing the number of people held in custody or custodial supervision. Decarceration, the opposite of incarceration, also entails reducing the rate of imprisonment at the federal, state and municipal level.

In this Social Justice Cafe speakers will talk about the issues surrounding mass incarceration and the impact on individuals, families and communities. The following are the speakers for this event:

  • Arnie Fischman, former prisoner, Bend the Arc Co-Chair of Bay Area Criminal Justice Reform Committee and State and National Core Leader of national Jewish social action organization
  • A speaker from Legal Services for Prisoners with Children (SF)
  • Lesley Currier from Returned Citizens Theater Group (Marin - works with prisoners in San Quentin and parolees)
  • Dameion Brown, former participant in Shakespeare at San Quentin, currently a professional actor and activist
  • Henry Frank, former prisoner at San Quentin and artist, who will present his remarkable Native American based artworks
  • Lots of questions and discussion
