Congregation Ner Shalom presents a benefit performance by the Los Angeles-based Mostly Kosher on Thursday, June 23 at 7PM. This will be Mostly Kosher’s Bay area premiere!
The seven-member band describes itself as “an indie-global-collective which radically reconstructs Judaic and American cultural musical roots” cooking up a “musical feast that explodes into a global food-fight of Jazz, Latin, Rock, Hip Hop, World and Folk through ravenous post-klezmer beats and arresting Yiddish refrains.”
Mostly Kosher performs often at renowned Los Angeles stages including the John Anson Ford Theater and Skirball Center. They recently played the Dorothy Chandler Pavilion for a live television broadcast to over half a million viewers.
Mostly Kosher’s self-titled debut album (Mostly Kosher) has been praised by World Music Network, Songlines Magazine, and BBC radio. World Music Network recognized the album’s Ikh Hob Dikh Tsufil Lib ("I Love You Much Too Much") as one of its Top Six Songs of 2014.
Mostly Kosher bandleader Leeav Sofer describes his fellow musicians thus: “Janice Mautner Markham, a punk-rock Jewess shredding violin out of the folk/rock scene to bring intensity to both the soundscape and stage. With surgical precision, yet pent up scream-at-the-top-of-your-lungs rock-and-roll energy, Eric Hagstrom lays the beat over Adam Levy’s soulful and magnetic sensibility on the bass, drawing the audience in. The Dick Van Dyke of the new millennium, Mike Bolger plays both accordion and trumpet, joined by Mike King’s boisterous trombone and Will Brahm’s virtuosic guitar.”
